Strangely enough there are still no recognised qualifications in the UK, for either SEO or Website Marketing. There are plenty of courses which touch on the these subjects as part of a business or marketing related course, but no one course specialises in these subjects (or rewards study with a degree or similar academic award).

The rise of SEO as a marketing method has meant that many people in the UK are employed solely as SEO consultants, account managers and assistants. There are also many companies dealing just in the sector of website marketing, so we find it strange there are still no ways to be able to prove ones knowledge. This kind of recognition from a University would surely prove to prospective clients that a company or a consultant had the necessary experience and skills to take on the services you need.

Just to put things in perspective, you can currently gain a degree level qualification in the following:

  • Surf science
  • Knitting
  • Puppetry
  • Folklore studies
  • Wine studies

Hopefully in the next few academic years we will see the introduction of qualifications in website marketing, across different levels from A-Levels, HND, Degree and through to Masters.

As the newest and most exciting form of marketing, the fact that website advertising revenues have now overtaken that of Television should be enough of an indicator to the education bodies.
